Illegal Structures and Tax Evasion: Who Really Loses?

Illegal structures that operate without regular authorizations represent a significant damage not only for tourism, but for the entire community. These activities, in fact, evade the payment of taxes and contributions, depriving the community of fundamental resources for the improvement of services and infrastructures. Taxes that should be allocated to schools, hospitals, transport and security are taken away from the common good.

From an economic point of view, this phenomenon creates a greater burden on the shoulders of regular operators, who find themselves forced to compete in disadvantageous conditions. Illegal activities, not having to bear the costs of authorizations and regulations, can offer lower prices, thus attracting less aware tourists. This dynamic not only harms those who respect the rules, but contributes to devaluing the entire tourism sector.
Even in terms of transparency and trust, the consequences are negative. Tourists who experience low-quality services or who suffer inconveniences in illegal structures associate these negative experiences with the territory, thus damaging the reputation of the destination.

To combat this phenomenon, a coordinated intervention between institutions, trade associations and citizens is necessary. Tax controls must be intensified, with severe fines for tax evaders and incentives for regular operators. Furthermore, it is essential to promote awareness campaigns to inform tourists about the risks associated with illegal structures and the importance of supporting the legal economy.
Only an integrated approach, combining prevention, control and awareness, will be able to guarantee a more equitable and sustainable future for tourism and local communities.
