“poor souls”

Naples, a city with ancient roots, maintains a deep connection with the cult of the souls of Purgatory, in particular with the so-called “anime pezzentelle”, the poor souls to whom Neapolitans have dedicated prayers and devotion over the centuries. This tour will take us to the most iconic places linked to this tradition, immersing us in the folklore and spirituality of the city.

Our journey begins from the splendid Piazza Dante, the starting point for crossing Port’Alba, the historic street of booksellers, and reaching Piazza Bellini. Here we will admire the ancient Greek walls that once surrounded Neapolis, the original nucleus of the city. Continuing along Via dei Tribunali, we will cross the Decumano Maggiore, the beating heart of Neapolitan life, among shops, street food and popular art.

During the walk, we will stop at the majestic bronze statue of Pulcinella, the work of the sculptor Lello Esposito, located in Vico Fico del Purgatorio. This symbol of Neapolitan tradition will introduce us to the theme of theatricality and spirituality that permeate the local culture.

The final stop will be the Museum Complex of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco. Here we will visit the 17th century baroque church and the evocative underground chapel with hypogeum, less decorated, dedicated to the burial of the pezzentelle souls. Between tales of miracles and popular legends, we will discover the history of this mystical place and the countless souls that rest there.

An intense and engaging experience, which combines history, religion and tradition, leading us to discover a unique aspect of Neapolitan culture.
