About This Tour

Exploring the Greek-Roman Heritage of Naples

The historic center of Naples exactly recalls the urban layout of the Greco-Roman district of Neapolis, with multiple ancient treasures hidden in churches, alleys, and palaces. Our tour will begin at the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, a basilica containing the remains of the apse of an ancient Paleochristian church and the beautiful hidden 17th-century fresco by Aniello Falcone. We will continue on Via Duomo to reach the monumental church of the same name. Only the majestic Gothic facade is visible; the interior encloses multiple wonders, including the Church of Santa Restituta, the city's first Paleochristian basilica, and the Chapel of San Gennaro, known as the People's Chapel, containing part of the treasure donated in devotion to the saint. Next, strolling along Via dell'Anticaglia, we will admire the remains of the ancient Roman theater, incorporated among the buildings of the upper decumanus. Descending to the major decumanus, Via dei Tribunali, we will reach our last stop, the “Neapolis sotterrata”, the underground archaeological site of the Monumental Complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore. The site preserves almost perfectly the remains of the ancient street that bordered the Macellum building, the market, with its attached shops, some of which are still recognizable in their function.
